South Africa is mourning after two separate mass shootings claimed the lives of 27 people and left another 26 injured within hours of each other. 

On Saturday, 26 September 2026, seventeen people got killed in a tavern near Carletonville, Johannesburg during a mass shooting. Behind the gun was eight men. Police says Fifteen sustained gunshot injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment. 

Hours later, Sunday morning, another mass shooting was reported  outside an entertainment area in a township near Cape Town. This involves ten deaths and eleven injuries. Five died at the scene and the other five later succumbed to their injuries after being taken to medical facilities.

Police are still running investigation concerning both mass shootings, and no arrest had been reported. Police have not given a definitive motive for either of the latest attacks.

South Africa has long recorded a high homicide rate by international standards. It has struggled to contain gang-related gun violence in recent years. There are Speculations that the ongoing violence might be linked with turf wars between illegal mining groups and drug traffickers. 

Early 2026 , the military was deployed in the areas with

 highest murder rates with a hope to reduce armed violence.

The attacks have left families and grieving yet again. Behind every death is a person whose absence will be felt by friends, relatives and an entire community.

Farm Worker Dies After Being Attacked by 4.5-Metre Rock Python in KwaDukuza

The man was reportedly busy cleaning when the approximately 4.5-metre-long python suddenly attacked him.
